Description
Two young lovers are happily planning their future on a warm September day, she teasing that he has purchased her from her stepfather for $5000. He insists that he only agreed to pay the money for her stepfather's consent, not her. However it was arranged, the pair expect they will soon marry and
The stepfather, a prominent archeologist, needed the money to purchase a mummy he wishes to study. Cash in hand, the Professor sends his assistant to escort the mummy back to the Professor's museum in Maine.
The delivery of the ancient mummy goes seriously awry when the Professor’s dead assistant is found inside the mummy case, instead of the mummy. There are no suspects, no motive, no reason to murder the young man and steal an old mummy with no value to anyone but a scientific scholar such as the Professor.
There only dead ends in solving the murder or theft, but there are a lot of people interested in finding the missing mummy. A Peruvian and his daughter heard about the mummy and come to Maine, claiming the mummy is their missing Incan ancestor, which they wish to find and return to the mountains of Peru. the Peruvian enlists the aid of a wealthy young shipbuilder hopelessly in love with his daughter. The wealthy young man is also the preferred husband of the Professor for his stepdaughter. After all, he is rich enough to finance the archaeological expedition the Professor desperately seeks to undertake. Since it appears his stepdaughter has no intention of changing fiancés, the Professor agrees to marry a wealthy widow. Why she is so eager to marry the cantankerous Professor is another mystery to be solved.
The characters are both colorful and comic as they each seek answers to the murder of the poor assistant and the recovery of the lost mummy, gradually revealing their secret motivations and guilt or innocence of the crime. It is a farcical comedy of the old fashioned variety.
